How to get there?
By plane
Getting to Mafia Island is an adventure in itself, often requiring multiple flights but offering breathtaking views along the way. Our journey began with a small plane, accommodating a maximum of 15 passengers, flying from the Serengeti to Arusha. The flight was a stunning introduction to Tanzania's landscapes, with sweeping views of savannahs and wildlife below.
From Arusha, we took another short flight to Zanzibar. This leg was equally picturesque, showcasing the lush greenery and azure waters of the region. After a brief stop in Zanzibar, we continued our travels with a flight to Dar es Salaam. The vibrant city serves as a gateway to many islands, including Mafia.
The final leg of our journey was a flight from Dar es Salaam to Mafia Island. This last stretch was particularly magical, as we were treated to the sight of whale sharks swimming in the sea below—an unforgettable view that made the long travel day worth it.
Overall, while the trip involves several connections, the stunning aerial views of Tanzania's diverse landscapes and marine life make every moment of the journey truly memorable.

In addition to flying, there are alternative routes to Mafia Island. For those looking for a more adventurous option, you can travel by ferry from Dar es Salaam. This journey offers a unique perspective of the coastal scenery and allows you to enjoy the sea breeze. Ferries typically run several times a week, providing a more budget-friendly option.
The ferry from Dar es Salaam to Mafia Island usually takes between 4 and 6 hours, depending on weather conditions and the route.
As for the costs, a ticket typically ranges from 30 to 60 USD per person, depending on the class and the ferry company. It is advisable to book in advance, especially during the high season.
If you’re in the mood for a road trip, consider taking a bus from Arusha to Dar es Salaam. This journey will take longer but offers an opportunity to see the countryside and interact with locals. Once in Dar es Salaam, you can then board a ferry or a small plane to Mafia Island.
