Our trip to Indonesia was in October 2023. We opted for a fairly low-budget travel approach, choosing to backpack and stay in hostels. Hostels in Indonesia are generally very inexpensive. Since Indonesia is also a highly accessible country, where everything can be arranged with just a few clicks on your smartphone, we decided not to book anything in advance and handle everything on the spot. If you plan to travel this way, it's advisable to buy a local SIM card at the airport.
We flew from Schiphol to Jakarta with Etihad Airways, with a layover in Abu Dhabi. We arrived very late in the evening and took a flight to Medan on the island of Sumatra early the next morning at 6 am. In hindsight, this wasn't the most efficient option, and perhaps it would have been better to fly directly from Schiphol to Medan. We spent one night at a hotel near the Jakarta airport.

Tourist Tax in Bali Starting 2024
Starting February 14, 2024, the provincial government of Bali will introduce a new tourist tax for foreign visitors. Every international tourist, whether arriving directly from abroad or via another province, will be required to pay a one-time fee of IDR 150.000 (approximately €10) during their stay in Indonesia.

Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival and must have at least 2 blank pages.

Visa on Arrival (VOA): This visa can be obtained upon arrival by land, air, or sea, or online in advance, for a stay of up to 30 days. The VOA is available at the following airports: Balikpapan (BPN), Banjarmasin (BDJ), Batam (BTH), Denpasar-Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK), Lombok (LOP), Medan Kuala Namu (KNO), Makassar (UPG), Manado (MDC), Padang (PDG), Palembang (PLM), Pekan Baru (PKU), Surabaya (SUB), Surakarta (Solo) (SOC), Tanjung Pinang (TNJ), and Yogyakarta (YIA).
