Serengeti National Park is one of Africa's most iconic safari destinations, renowned for its endless plains, diverse wildlife, and the annual Great Migration. Here, you can witness thousands of wildebeests and zebras traverse the landscape, closely followed by predators like lions, cheetahs, and leopards. The Serengeti offers a truly immersive experience into the raw beauty of Tanzania’s natural world, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

Access and Tickets

Serengeti National Park, located in Tanzania, is one of the most iconic wildlife parks in the world. Access to the park requires an entrance ticket, which can be purchased at the park entrances or online through the official website of the Tanzanian Ministry of Nature and Tourism. Prices vary based on nationality and visitor type (adult, child, or resident). It’s advisable to plan ahead, especially during peak season when the park can become quite busy.

Types of Safaris

There are several types of safaris available in the Serengeti:

  1. Game Drives: This is the most popular way to explore the park. You can choose between group safaris or private safaris with an experienced driver/guide who will show you the best spots for wildlife viewing.

  2. Walking Safaris: For the adventurous traveler, some operators offer walking safaris, where you can explore the park on foot under the guidance of an experienced ranger.

  3. Hot Air Balloon Rides: For a breathtaking view of the savannah, you can take a hot air balloon ride. This offers a unique opportunity to see the landscape and animals from above, followed by a champagne breakfast on the ground.

  4. Cultural Tours: Some tours provide the chance to engage with local tribes, such as the Maasai, and learn more about their culture and traditions.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the Serengeti in Tanzania is during the Great Migration, which typically occurs from late May to October. During this period, millions of wildebeest and zebras travel in search of fresh grazing.

In June and July, the herds are often found in the central Serengeti, where the chances of witnessing dramatic river crossings are high. By August and September, they move towards the northern region and the Grumeti River. This spectacular natural event draws not only wildlife enthusiasts but also photographers eager to capture the raw beauty of nature in action.

Visiting during these months ensures an unforgettable experience, as the landscapes transform with the migration, offering breathtaking views and unique wildlife encounters.

Our Experience

During our visit, we embarked on three full days of game drives with our own driver. Each day started early in the morning, and we returned late in the evening, equipped with a packed lunch for picnicking in the wild.

The roads in the park aren’t always in the best condition, leading to quite a bit of bouncing around—what our driver humorously referred to as an "African massage." This added an extra layer of adventure, allowing us to reach areas we might not have seen otherwise.

Throughout our safari, we encountered a remarkable variety of animals. We spotted majestic lions lounging in the shade, elegant giraffes wandering across the savannah, and countless zebras and buffalo grazing. A highlight was seeing a leopard resting in a tree, a stunning sight. Additionally, we observed wildebeests in large herds, creating a spectacular scene.

The Serengeti is not just a place for animal observation; it’s an unforgettable experience that connects you with nature in all its glory. A visit to this park leaves a lasting impression and is a must for any nature lover.
