Shkodër, nestled in the northern part of Albania, is a city rich in history and culture, known for its stunning landscapes and historical sites. However, during our brief stopover, we didn't get to explore as much as we would have liked. Our visit was limited to just one day, and unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate, leaving us with little opportunity for outdoor adventures.
Despite the rain, we appreciated the city’s charming atmosphere and its scenic surroundings, which are perfect for those who have more time to delve into the local culture and history.
There are many attractions in Shkodër worth exploring when the weather permits. The Rozafa Castle, perched on a hilltop, offers breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding lakes. Visitors can explore its ancient walls and learn about the legends surrounding the castle's construction. The Marubi National Museum of Photography showcases a fascinating collection of historical photographs, providing insight into the region's past.
Additionally, Shkodër is known for its vibrant bazaar, where you can find local crafts, traditional Albanian products, and delicious food. The nearby Lake Shkodër is a great spot for those looking to enjoy nature, offering opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and boat rides.
Shkodër’s blend of stunning architecture and natural beauty certainly makes it a destination worth returning to when the weather is better.
How to get there?
We set off early in the morning at 7:30 AM, taking a boat back to the harbor in Koman from our hotel. Upon arrival, we had a minibus reserved for 9:00 AM that would take us to Shkodër, a journey of about 2.5 hours. I won’t lie when I say that those 2.5 hours felt like quite the challenge. The route to Shkodër consists of winding mountain roads, with sharp turns and narrow paths, making for a thrilling yet bumpy ride. Everyone in the minibus was relieved when we finally arrived at our destination.
You can conveniently book the bus through Bookaway, with tickets costing approximately 14 euros per person.
The minibus drops you off around 11:30 AM in the center of Shkodër, from where you have the option to either continue your travels or take a taxi to your accommodation. Despite the winding journey, the anticipation of exploring Shkodër kept our spirits high, and the stunning views along the way provided a glimpse of the beautiful landscapes we were about to discover.

The hosts were incredibly welcoming and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. To make our visit even more special, they surprised us with a bottle of wine and a delicious cake to celebrate our birthdays. This thoughtful gesture made us feel truly appreciated and added a personal touch to our experience.
The interior of our cottage was charmingly decorated, blending traditional Albanian elements with modern comforts, making it feel like a home away from home. Moreover, the location is ideal for exploring the natural beauty of the area. Whether you want to take a leisurely stroll by the lake or embark on a hiking adventure, Villa Teverde serves as a perfect base for your explorations.
