Tirana, the lively capital of Albania, is a city that surprises at every corner. Once overlooked by travelers, it has recently transformed into a must-visit destination, offering a mix of rich history, vibrant street life, and modern developments. From colorful buildings to bustling markets, Tirana exudes an energetic charm that reflects the country’s rapid progress. Stroll through Skanderbeg Square, visit the fascinating museums, and soak up the café culture while exploring the city’s mix of Ottoman, Italian, and communist-era architecture. Whether you're here for its history, culture, or emerging food scene, Tirana is sure to leave an impression.

How to get there?

There are several ways to get to Tirana, depending on your starting point and travel preferences. If you're flying, Tirana International Airport (Nënë Tereza) is the main gateway to the city, located about 17 kilometers from the center. From the airport, you can take a taxi or shuttle bus, both of which offer a direct route into the city.

For those already in Albania or nearby countries, buses are a popular and affordable option. Tirana is well-connected with major cities like Shkoder, Durres, and even international destinations like Podgorica in Montenegro and Pristina in Kosovo. The bus network is extensive and typically reliable, though travel times can vary.

Alternatively, if you're looking for more flexibility and comfort, private taxis or ride-sharing services are available, making it easy to travel directly from your accommodation to Tirana.

We booked a taxi through our hotel a few days in advance, which took us from the center of Shkoder to Tirana in about two hours. The trip cost us €100, offering a comfortable and hassle-free journey, especially if you prefer not to rely on public transport.

What to do?

Tirana’s city center is full of fascinating sights and activities. A visit to Skanderbeg Square is a perfect starting point, where you’ll find the iconic Et'hem Bey Mosque, a beautiful example of 18th-century Ottoman architecture. This mosque stands as a symbol of Tirana’s rich cultural heritage and is one of the most visited landmarks in the city.

For a unique view of the mosque and the surrounding cityscape, head to the Pyramid of Tirana, a striking structure originally built as a museum for Enver Hoxha, Albania’s former communist leader. You can climb the steps of the Pyramid, and from the top, you’ll get a fantastic panoramic view over the city, including a distant view of the Et'hem Bey Mosque nestled between modern buildings. It’s a perfect spot to appreciate how Tirana blends its historical charm with its modern, evolving skyline.

Another to do is Bunk'Art, located just outside the center. This Cold War-era bunker has been transformed into a museum that delves into Albania's communist past. Bunk'Art's immersive exhibits take you through Albania’s history, from everyday life under the regime to the country’s military and political history. It’s a fascinating and moving experience that adds a deeper understanding of Tirana's complex past.

Where to stay

Agroturism Blerina, located just outside Tirana (10km), offers a truly unique and tranquil stay surrounded by nature. This charming accommodation is not just a place to sleep but an authentic experience in itself. The small farm on the property ensures that the food served is as fresh as it gets, with many ingredients coming straight from the garden. From farm-to-table meals to the warm, family-like hospitality, every detail at Agroturism Blerina reflects a deep connection to the land.

The rooms are comfortable, with a rustic yet cozy atmosphere, perfect for those who want to escape the hustle of the city while still being close to Tirana. It’s an ideal base for travelers who appreciate sustainable tourism and local, organic food in a peaceful rural setting.

Agroturism Blerina offers not just one, but two exceptional dining experiences that highlight the freshest local ingredients. The Toka Restaurant is their farm-to-table gem, known for its commitment to ethical and environmental standards. Toka works with local, sustainable producers, and reduces non-recyclable waste. The restaurant raises its own organic fruits and vegetables, along with a few cows, sheep, goats, and chickens, supplying the kitchen with over 50 varieties of fresh produce and dairy products like milk, homemade yogurt, butter, and cheese. The Toka Restaurant offers a five or seven-course dinner, with both vegetarian and vegan options that change with the seasons. Nurturing three greenhouses and several gardens, the menu is entirely inspired by what is fresh, seasonal, and locally grown.

For a more rustic yet equally delicious experience, the Blerina Farm House offers simple but incredibly fresh dishes. While the presentation may be less elaborate than at Toka, the quality and taste remain exceptional. Both restaurants are open to external visitors, making Agroturism Blerina not only a fantastic place to stay but also a top choice for food lovers looking to enjoy authentic farm-to-table cuisine in the Tirana region.
